Bird watching, Botanical and Natural History Holidays
Estonia is the smallest and least populous of the three Baltic States which achieved independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. It is a land of great natural beauty, but still comparatively little known as a wildlife destination.
However the abundance of natural habitats is reflected in a very impressive avifauna which matches that of any other country in northern Europe. The country has a long, indented and diverse coastline with more than 1000 islands. Forests and woodlands cover almost half of the Estonian territory. An admirable seventeen percent of the country is afforded protection within nature reserves that vary in size from the large national parks to the smaller, locally protected, reserves.

Extensive undeveloped coastal areas with wide-spread reed-beds and grasslands as well as unique untouched nature with winding rivers, vast floodplains, mires, bogs and primeval forests in the central part of the mainland are habitats for thousands of migrating and breeding birds and many species of rare mammals. Its flora is amongst the most spectacular in northern Europe. In particular, strong influences in the country's floral make-up come from both Siberia and also the warmer regions of southern Europe, with many plant species reaching their respective western or northern extremities of range within Estonia.

Due to geographical location between the East and West, the territory of Estonia was under the rule of different countries for the last seven centuries - German, Danish, Swedish and Russian. The rich history is the other important reason to see that country.

Estonian Nature Tours

Estonian Nature Tours is a new trade mark of Kumari Reisid offering Bird watching and Botanical Tours. Our individual and specialised approach to tourism was developed over a number of years of organising local travel services in Matsalu National Park, before broadening our operations in the spring of 2004 to include visits to a wide variety of nature reserves throughout Estonia.

The principal aim of these trips is to introduce visitors to the unique natural heritage and wildlife of Estonia, which have fortunately been preserved at many places in our country thanks to enlightened attitudes towards conservation, and a deep-rooted tradition of respect for the natural world. Each trip is escorted by a skilled Estonian leader with the necessary local expertise and these are often professional biologists or nature reserve employees.

Our services can also include the reservation of accommodation, meals and transport to form a fully inclusive tour in accordance with the specifications of our clients. Participants have returned from these holidays full of enthusiasm, not just for the superlative bird watching but also for the hospitality of local people who take great pride in sharing with visitors both the natural history and the gastronomic delights of our country.

ENT & Responsible Tourism

Natural history tourism, and especially Bird watching, are highly specialised areas of tourism that demand a high level of professionalism and an intimate knowledge of the subject matter from the ground agent. Estonia is enjoying an increasing recognition as an attractive bird watching destination which every year brings ever more birdwatchers from all over Europe in search of the many interesting bird species found in our country. We are proud of this interest in our natural attributes but also aware of the potential dangers that uncontrolled tourism can pose to the fragile eco-systems supporting the birdlife, and the organisation of ’Responsible Tourism’ through liaison with the management of our national Nature Reserves is the ethos that dictates all our actions at Estonian Nature Tours.
